Devotional Reflection
Still Becoming
Sis, today is my birthday, and birthdays have a way of making you stop and think. They make you look back at where you’ve been, look at where you are, and wonder about where you’re going. Today, I’m grateful for another year of life, but I’m also grateful for something that doesn’t come wrapped in a box: I’m grateful that God is still working on me.
Psalm 139 has taught us throughout this journey that we serve a God who knows us completely. He knew us before anyone celebrated our first birthday. He saw us when we were being formed. He knows every chapter we’ve lived—the beautiful ones, the painful ones, the ones we would gladly relive, and the ones we thought we would never survive. Yet through every season, God has remained present. When I think about another year of life, I realize that growing older isn’t simply about adding another number. It is another opportunity to recognize just how faithfully God has carried us.
But birthdays can also make us evaluate ourselves. We can begin thinking about what we thought we would have accomplished by now, where we thought we would be, what should have happened already, or what we wish we could change. That’s why Psalm 46:10 speaks so deeply to me: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes we need to stop measuring our lives long enough to simply recognize God in them. Be still from comparing. Be still from rushing. Be still from trying to figure everything out. Be still from believing you are behind. God is still God, and He is still at work.
Then Isaiah reminds us, “They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength.” Waiting can feel like nothing is happening, but God often does some of His deepest work in our waiting seasons. Waiting isn’t wasted when we’re waiting with God. He renews strength we didn’t realize had become depleted. He changes our perspective. He develops patience, wisdom, discernment, and faith. And when the time comes to move, we discover that God was preparing us while we thought we were simply waiting.
So on my birthday, this is what I want to tell every woman walking this Challenge139 journey with me: give yourself permission to still be becoming. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to be everything today that God is developing you to become tomorrow. There are still lessons to learn, places to grow, dreams to discover, prayers to pray, laughter to enjoy, people to love, and parts of God’s purpose for your life that you haven’t even seen yet.
I am learning to appreciate the woman God created, while still allowing Him to work on the woman I am becoming. I can praise Him because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, be still because He is God, and wait because I know He will renew my strength. Those truths allow me to look at another year differently. I’m not just getting older—I’m still becoming.
And Sis, so are you.
Whatever season of life you’re in today, don’t rush through it trying to get to the next one. Look around. There is something God wants to show you right where you are. Celebrate how far He’s brought you. Give yourself grace for the areas where you’re still growing. Rest when you need to rest. Wait when He tells you to wait. Move when He tells you to move. And above all, never stop thanking Him for the beautiful gift of becoming the woman He created you to be.
Today, I’m celebrating life. I’m celebrating growth. I’m celebrating grace. I’m celebrating every lesson, every tear, every laugh, every prayer God answered and even the ones He answered differently than I expected.
And I’m celebrating this:
God isn’t finished with me yet. 50 will be here before I know it! LOL
Journal Prompt
Take a few moments today and reflect on your own journey, no matter when your birthday comes.
Ask yourself:
Who was I a year ago, and what has God developed in me since then?
Then consider:
Where do I need to stop rushing myself and trust God’s process?
Finally, write down this statement and finish it in your own words:
“God, thank You that I’m still becoming…”
Today’s Challenge
Celebrate Your Becoming
Although today is my birthday, I’m inviting you to celebrate with me—but we’re celebrating more than a birthday.
Find three things today:
Something God brought you THROUGH.
Think of one season you didn’t know how you would survive—but you did.
Something God is doing IN you.
Identify one way you can see yourself growing.
Something you’re trusting God FOR.
Name one thing you are still waiting on Him to do.
Then take a moment and simply say:
“Thank You, Lord, for where I’ve been, where I am, and where You’re taking me.”
No complaining today about how long it’s taking.
No comparing your journey to somebody else’s.
Just gratitude for the journey—and trust for what comes next.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, today I thank You for the gift of life. Thank You for every year, every season, every lesson, and every experience that has helped shape me. Thank You that before I ever knew myself, You knew me. Thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Teach me to be still when I am tempted to rush ahead of You and to wait on You when I grow weary. Renew my strength for the journey ahead.
And Lord, today I pray for every woman reading this devotional. Remind her that she is not behind, forgotten, or overlooked. Help her recognize Your hand throughout her story. Give her grace for who she has been, gratitude for who she is today, and faith for the woman she is still becoming. Renew the woman who is tired. Strengthen the woman who has been waiting. Encourage the woman who is questioning her journey. And remind every one of us that as long as You are working, our story is still unfolding. Thank You for another day to live, love, grow, serve, worship, and become. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
You don’t have to rush the woman God is still shaping.
Sis, be still. Wait on Him. Let Him renew you. You are still becoming. 💗
