Today’s Scripture

Psalm 139:23 (KJV)

Devotional Reflection

Show Me, Me!

Sis, one of the hardest people to see clearly can sometimes be the woman staring back at us in the mirror. We can recognize somebody else’s attitude, somebody else’s patterns, somebody else’s unhealthy behavior, and somebody else’s need for growth while completely missing what may be happening within ourselves. That’s what makes David’s prayer in Psalm 139:23 so powerful: “Search me, O God.” David isn’t asking God to show him what is wrong with everybody around him. He is asking God to show him himself.

We’ve spent many days reminding ourselves that God already knows us. He knows our thoughts, our words, our movements, our history, and our hearts. So when David says, “Search me,” he isn’t giving God information that God doesn’t already have. He is opening himself to what God may want to reveal. Maybe the prayer isn’t really, “God, find out what’s in me.” Maybe it is, “God, show me what You already see.”

That is a courageous prayer because sometimes God will show us something we would rather explain away. He may reveal that what we’ve been calling “protecting my peace” has actually become avoidance. What we’ve called “just being honest” may sometimes be harshness. What we’ve labeled discernment could be suspicion. What we’ve called strength may actually be our refusal to ask for help. And sometimes what we have called waiting on God is really fear keeping us from moving.

That doesn’t mean every boundary, concern, hesitation, or strong response is wrong. It means we should be willing to let God examine the heart behind it. David says, “know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.” Behavior is often only the surface. God is interested in what’s happening underneath it—our motives, fears, wounds, assumptions, and intentions.

Sis, spiritual maturity isn’t only knowing more Scripture. It is allowing Scripture and the Spirit of God to reveal more of us to us. There are things we can ask God to remove, but there are also things He may want to heal. There are behaviors He may want to correct, but there are wounds underneath some of those behaviors that He wants to touch. God doesn’t reveal what’s inside us simply to point a finger at us. He reveals so He can transform.

And this is where grace becomes so important. When God shows you something about yourself, don’t immediately run to shame. Don’t start tearing yourself down. Don’t decide that because there is an area that needs work, everything about you is wrong. Remember the God doing the searching is the same God who formed you, knows you, thinks precious thoughts toward you, stays near you, and loves you.

So today, instead of asking, “Lord, why are they like that?” maybe we ask, “Lord, what are You trying to show me about me?”

Maybe He’ll show you something beautiful that you’ve failed to recognize. Maybe He’ll show you growth you haven’t celebrated. Maybe He’ll reveal something you need to release. Maybe He’ll uncover an attitude that needs adjusting or a wound that still needs healing.

Whatever He shows you, don’t run from the mirror.

Let Him show you you.

Because the goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is transformation.

Journal Prompt

Take a quiet moment and pray:

“God, show me me.”

Then ask yourself:

What is one pattern, reaction, attitude, fear, or habit in my life that God may be asking me to examine more closely?

Don’t stop with what you do. Go deeper and ask:

“What might be underneath this?”

Finish by writing:

“Lord, give me the courage to see what You reveal and the grace to let You change it.”

Today’s Challenge

Look in the Mirror

Today, stand in front of a mirror for one quiet minute.

Not to examine your hair.

Not to critique your body.

Not to look for flaws.

Look yourself in the eyes and pray:

“Search me, O God. Show me what You see. Reveal what needs healing, what needs changing, and what needs celebrating.”

Then throughout your day, pay attention to your reactions.

When something irritates, frustrates, hurts, or triggers you, pause before immediately responding and ask:

“God, what is this reaction showing me about me?”

Write down anything that stands out.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, You already know me completely, but today I am asking You to help me know myself more honestly. Search me, O God. Know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. Show me the places where I have grown, the places where I need healing, and the places where I still need to change. Reveal motives I have overlooked, attitudes I have justified, fears I have hidden, and wounds I have learned to live around. Give me humility to receive what You show me without defensiveness and grace to receive it without condemnation. Thank You that You don’t reveal things to destroy me but to transform me. Keep shaping my heart until my life reflects more of You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sis, Remember This…

God showing you something about yourself isn’t rejection—it’s an invitation to transformation.

Sis, don’t be afraid of what the mirror reveals when God is the One standing beside you. 💗
