God Knows What You Haven’t Said
Sis, have you ever been carrying something so heavy in your heart that you didn’t even know how to explain it to someone else? Maybe you’ve been worried about something, disappointed by something, or quietly struggling with a situation that you haven’t shared with anyone. People ask how you’re doing, and you smile and say, “I’m fine,” because explaining everything would take more energy than you have at the moment. And sometimes, if we’re honest, we don’t even know where to begin. We know something is bothering us, but finding the words to describe it seems almost impossible. But here’s what I want you to remember today: God knows what you haven’t said.
Psalm 139:2 reminds us that God knows our downsitting and our uprising, and He understands our thoughts afar off. Think about the comfort in that statement. Before we can organize our thoughts into sentences, before we can explain why something hurts, before we can identify exactly what we’re feeling, God already understands. He doesn’t need us to provide a detailed explanation before He recognizes what’s happening within us. He knows the concerns we haven’t shared, the questions we haven’t asked, the disappointments we’ve tried to hide, and the thoughts that seem to return when everything around us becomes quiet.
And Sis, sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying things privately that we forget we were never meant to carry everything alone. We tell ourselves that we don’t want to burden anyone. We convince ourselves that other people have enough problems of their own. We remind ourselves that we’re strong, capable, and accustomed to handling difficult situations. And while there may be wisdom in being careful about whom we confide in, there is a difference between being private and becoming emotionally isolated. Just because you’ve learned how to carry something quietly doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy.
First Peter 5:7 gives us a beautiful invitation: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” Notice that Peter doesn’t tell us to cast only the concerns we can explain, the problems we’ve figured out, or the burdens that seem important enough to mention. He says all your care. That includes the concerns that seem small to everybody else but feel enormous to you. It includes the things you’ve been worrying about in the middle of the night, the decisions you haven’t made, the conversations you’re afraid to have, and the situations you don’t know how to change.
And here’s something else I’ve been thinking about. Sometimes we hesitate to bring certain things before God because we feel like we should already be handling them better. We think, “I shouldn’t still be upset about this,” or “I know I need to trust God, so why am I still worried?” We may even feel guilty because we’ve prayed about something before, yet it continues to trouble us. But Sis, bringing the same concern to God again doesn’t mean you have failed to trust Him. Sometimes surrender is something we practice repeatedly as we learn to depend on Him more deeply.
There’s also something important about the words “for he careth for you.” Peter doesn’t simply tell us to release our burdens because God is powerful enough to handle them. He reminds us that God cares about us. His invitation is personal. The God who understands our thoughts is also the God who is concerned about our well-being. We aren’t bringing our burdens to someone who is annoyed by our needs or impatient with our struggles. We are coming before a loving Father who invites us to trust Him.
Maybe you’ve been holding back tears because you don’t want anyone to see how overwhelmed you feel. Maybe you’ve been carrying concerns about your family, your health, your marriage, your ministry, your finances, or your future. Maybe there’s something you’ve been trying to process that you haven’t been ready to talk about. Or perhaps you’ve been feeling emotionally exhausted without being able to identify one particular reason. Whatever the situation may be, you don’t have to pretend that everything is okay when you come before God.
And let me say something else, Sis. Casting your cares upon God doesn’t mean you can never talk to someone about what you’re experiencing. Sometimes God’s provision includes the wisdom, encouragement, prayer, and practical support of people He places in our lives. We can trust God and still ask for help. We can pray and still seek wise counsel. We can have faith and still acknowledge that something is difficult. Trusting God doesn’t require us to deny what we’re feeling. It invites us to bring those feelings into His presence.
Throughout this Challenge139 journey, we’ve been reminded that God knows us completely. He knows our thoughts, our hearts, our struggles, and our stories. But today, I want us to recognize that His knowledge of us is not distant or impersonal. He doesn’t simply know what we’re carrying. He cares about the woman carrying it.
So today, Sis, if there’s something you’ve been holding inside, take a moment to acknowledge it before God. You don’t have to make your prayer sound beautiful. You don’t have to have every thought organized. You don’t even have to know exactly what to ask for. Sometimes the most honest prayer begins with, “Lord, I don’t even know how to explain this, but You know.”
And He does.
He knows the thought you haven’t finished.
He understands the concern you haven’t shared.
He sees the burden you’ve learned to carry quietly.
Sis, God knows what you haven’t said. And He cares about what you’re carrying.
Journal Prompt
Take a quiet moment and reflect honestly.
What is something I’ve been carrying in my heart that I haven’t shared with anyone?
Then ask yourself:
Why have I been holding on to this concern? Am I afraid of being misunderstood, worried about burdening someone else, or simply unsure how to express what I’m feeling?
Finally, write:
“Lord, You know what I haven’t said. You understand what I haven’t been able to explain. Today, I am bringing this burden before You because I know You care for me.”
Today’s Challenge
The Unspoken Prayer
Today, I want you to spend a few minutes with God and bring before Him something you’ve been carrying quietly.
1. Acknowledge It
Write down one concern, emotion, or situation you’ve been keeping to yourself.
You don’t have to explain it perfectly. Just be honest.
2. Give It to God
Read 1 Peter 5:7 slowly.
Then pray:
“Lord, I’m giving You what I’ve been carrying. I don’t know how everything will work out, but I know You care for me.”
3. Consider What Support You Need
Ask yourself whether there is a trusted person you need to talk to, a practical step you need to take, or a decision you’ve been avoiding.
Remember, surrendering something to God doesn’t always mean doing nothing. Sometimes trusting Him includes taking the next wise step.
4. Return to His Promise
Whenever that concern returns to your thoughts today, remind yourself:
“God knows. God understands. God cares.”
You may have to remind yourself more than once, and that’s okay.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for knowing me completely. Thank You for understanding the thoughts I haven’t spoken, the concerns I haven’t shared, and the burdens I haven’t known how to explain. You know the things that have been weighing on my heart, even when I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m okay. Forgive me for the times I’ve believed I had to carry everything alone or felt that my concerns were too small to bring before You. Teach me to trust Your care and to bring every burden into Your presence. Give me wisdom to recognize what I need to release, what I need to address, and when I need to ask for help. Lord, strengthen the places where I feel overwhelmed, comfort the places where I am hurting, and bring peace to the thoughts that have been troubling me. Thank You that I don’t have to find perfect words to be understood by You. Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and caring about every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
Just because you haven’t said it out loud doesn’t mean God doesn’t know you’re carrying it.
Sis, He knows the thoughts you can’t explain, the concerns you haven’t shared, and the burdens you’ve been carrying quietly. You don’t have to find the perfect words. Just bring it to Him. He cares for you. 💗
