Devotional Reflection
Even There, His Hand Will Lead You
Sis, have you ever been in a situation where you knew you needed to move forward, but you weren’t quite sure what moving forward was supposed to look like? Maybe you were facing a decision that could change the direction of your life. Maybe you were trying to figure out your next step in your career, your ministry, your family, or a personal situation that had become more complicated than you expected. You prayed about it, thought about it, talked about it, and perhaps even made a few lists of what you should or shouldn’t do. But despite all your efforts, you still didn’t have the clarity you wanted. And if we’re honest, sometimes the hardest part of trusting God isn’t believing that He can lead us. It’s learning to follow Him when we cannot see the entire path.
Psalm 139:9–10 gives us a beautiful picture of God’s presence and guidance. David says, “If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” Think about the imagery in those words. David imagines traveling as far as the morning light can reach, even to the most distant parts of the sea. And yet, even there, God’s hand would lead him and His right hand would hold him. David understood that distance could not place him beyond God’s presence or care.
And Sis, there’s something especially meaningful about the words “Even there.” Because sometimes we find ourselves in places we never expected to be. Not necessarily physical locations, but circumstances, responsibilities, relationships, and seasons of life that look completely different from what we imagined. We may have entered those seasons through opportunities we welcomed, decisions we made, or changes we never saw coming. And when we find ourselves trying to adjust, we can begin wondering whether God is still guiding our steps.
But David reminds us that God’s presence is not limited by how familiar or unfamiliar our surroundings may be. Even in the most distant place he could imagine, David recognized that God’s hand would still lead him. The uncertainty of our circumstances does not place us beyond God’s ability to guide us.
And here’s something I’ve been thinking about. Sometimes we want God’s guidance to come with a complete explanation. We want Him to show us what to do, how everything will work out, how long the process will take, and whether we’ll be comfortable with the outcome. We want confirmation before commitment, understanding before obedience, and reassurance before taking the next step. But faith doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes we have to move forward with the understanding we have while continuing to seek God’s wisdom for what we don’t yet know.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean entirely on our own understanding. That doesn’t mean God expects us to stop thinking, planning, or making responsible decisions. Wisdom requires us to consider our circumstances, seek counsel, and evaluate the choices before us. But it does mean recognizing that our understanding is limited. We don’t always have access to every detail, and we cannot predict every outcome. Trusting God means acknowledging that His wisdom is greater than our ability to figure everything out.
Now, Sis, let me say something here. Sometimes we confuse trusting God with doing nothing. We say we’re waiting on Him, but perhaps we’re avoiding a conversation, delaying a necessary decision, or refusing to take a responsible step because we’re afraid of what might happen. There are certainly seasons when waiting is wise. But there are also times when we already know what obedience requires, and what we’re really struggling with is the courage to follow through. That’s why we need discernment. We must learn the difference between patiently waiting for direction and allowing fear to keep us from moving forward.
And there’s another part of today’s Scripture that I don’t want us to overlook. David doesn’t simply say that God’s hand will lead him. He says, “and thy right hand shall hold me.” What a beautiful combination of guidance and support! God’s presence is not described only as something that directs the path. David also recognizes the sustaining care of the One who holds him. And Sis, I believe that’s a reminder many of us need. Because sometimes we’re so focused on asking God to show us what to do next that we forget to thank Him for the strength He’s providing while we’re trying to figure it out.
Maybe you’re in a season where you’re doing everything you know to do, but the answers still haven’t come. You’re showing up, handling your responsibilities, praying for wisdom, and trying to remain faithful. And while you may not see significant changes taking place, you’re still standing. You’re still learning. You’re still growing. You’re still finding the strength to face another day. Don’t overlook the ways God may be sustaining you simply because He hasn’t yet revealed everything you want to know.
And Sis, sometimes we need to recognize that being held by God doesn’t mean we will never stumble. We may make decisions that require correction. We may misunderstand a situation or discover that our plans need to change. We may experience disappointment even when we’ve tried to act wisely. But spiritual growth includes learning to remain humble enough to seek God’s guidance again, acknowledge our mistakes, and make necessary adjustments. Trusting God doesn’t require us to pretend we always get everything right.
Think about how often we become discouraged because life isn’t unfolding according to our timeline. We thought we’d be further along by now. We expected certain doors to open sooner. We imagined that a particular responsibility would become easier with experience. We believed that after enough prayer, preparation, and effort, things would begin making more sense. But sometimes we discover that growth involves walking through unfamiliar territory longer than we anticipated.
And here’s what I want us to remember: A season of uncertainty is not automatically a season without purpose. Sometimes we’re learning patience. Sometimes we’re developing wisdom. Sometimes we’re discovering strengths and weaknesses we hadn’t previously recognized. Sometimes we’re being challenged to release control and trust God more deeply. And sometimes we’re simply living through difficult circumstances that require endurance, support, and practical decisions. We don’t have to claim that every hardship was specifically arranged to teach us a lesson in order to trust that God remains present and faithful.
Sis, I also want us to think about the difference between being led by God and trying to lead God. Sometimes we come before Him with our plans already established, and what we really want is His approval. We’ve decided how we think things should happen, when they should happen, and what the outcome ought to be. And when circumstances don’t cooperate, we become frustrated. But genuine surrender requires us to remain open to God’s wisdom, even when it challenges our preferences.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have dreams, goals, or plans. It means we hold them with humility. We can work diligently toward something while acknowledging that God may direct us differently. We can pursue opportunities while remaining willing to reconsider our motives and decisions. We can ask Him to bless our efforts while also asking Him to correct us when our desires are pulling us away from what is wise and right.
Maybe today you’re standing at a crossroads. Maybe there’s a decision you’ve been putting off because you’re afraid of making the wrong choice. Maybe you’re adjusting to a season you never expected, and you’re struggling to understand what comes next. Or perhaps you’re simply tired of feeling as though you’re always trying to figure something out.
Whatever your circumstances may be, I want you to remember that you don’t have to navigate them without seeking God’s guidance. You can bring your questions before Him. You can study His Word, seek wise counsel, examine your motives, and take responsible steps. And when you don’t have every answer, you can continue trusting His character.
Because sometimes, Sis, the next step of faith isn’t a dramatic decision or a major change. Sometimes it’s choosing to remain faithful in the responsibilities already before you. Sometimes it’s having the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Sometimes it’s asking for help. Sometimes it’s allowing yourself to rest instead of trying to force an answer. And sometimes it’s simply acknowledging that you don’t know what tomorrow holds, but you’re willing to trust God with today.
So as we continue this Challenge139 journey, I want us to pay attention to the words David used.
“Even there shall thy hand lead me.”
Even in unfamiliar circumstances.
Even when the answers aren’t immediate.
Even when the journey looks different from what we imagined.
And then he says:
“And thy right hand shall hold me.”
What a reminder that the God we seek for direction is also the God we can depend on for strength.
Sis, you don’t have to see the entire path to take the next faithful step.
You don’t have to understand every detail to seek God’s wisdom.
And you don’t have to carry every responsibility as though everything depends entirely on you.
Even there, His hand will lead you.
And even there, His hand will hold you.
Journal Prompt
Learning to Trust His Guidance
Today, take a few moments to reflect on the areas where you’re seeking God’s direction.
1. What situation in my life has been causing me to feel uncertain about my next step?
Consider whether you’re waiting for clarity, avoiding a decision, or trying to control an outcome.
2. Have I been seeking God’s direction, or have I already decided what I want Him to approve?
Be honest about your motives, expectations, and willingness to follow His wisdom.
3. What is one faithful, responsible step I can take with the understanding I have today?
Remember, you don’t have to know everything about tomorrow to respond wisely today.
Write this declaration:
“Lord, I may not see the entire path, but I trust Your wisdom. Help me follow Your guidance, recognize Your strength, and remain faithful wherever this journey takes me.”
Today’s Challenge
One Step at a Time
Today, we’re going to practice trusting God’s guidance without demanding to know every detail of the journey.
Step 1 — Identify Your Uncertainty
Write down one decision, responsibility, or situation where you’ve been struggling to know what comes next.
Step 2 — Pray for Wisdom
Read Proverbs 3:5–6 slowly.
Then pray:
“Lord, help me recognize where I’ve been relying only on my own understanding. Give me wisdom to make decisions that honor You.”
Step 3 — Take One Responsible Step
Choose one action that moves you toward greater clarity or faithful obedience.
Maybe you need to gather information, ask for advice, have a conversation, complete a task, or simply make time to think and pray without distractions.
Step 4 — Release the Need to Control Everything
At the end of the day, ask yourself:
“Did I take the step I could responsibly take today, or did I allow uncertainty about tomorrow to keep me from moving forward?”
Thank God for His guidance and strength, even if the entire situation hasn’t been resolved.
Today’s reminder: Faith doesn’t always mean knowing what’s next. Sometimes it means trusting God enough to take the next wise step.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the God whose presence reaches every place and every season of my life. Thank You for knowing the path before me, even when I cannot see where it leads. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed uncertainty, fear, or the desire to control every outcome to keep me from trusting Your guidance. Sometimes I want answers before I take a step, reassurance before I make a decision, and understanding before I’m willing to move forward. But today, I am reminded that Your wisdom is greater than mine. Search my heart, Lord, and reveal the places where I’ve been leaning too heavily on my own understanding. Give me discernment to recognize when I need to wait, courage to act when I need to move, and humility to accept correction when my plans need to change. Strengthen me in the responsibilities I’m carrying and remind me that I don’t have to navigate every challenge through my own strength. Thank You for being present in unfamiliar places, for sustaining me through difficult seasons, and for inviting me to trust You one step at a time. Lord, continue leading me in the way everlasting. Wherever this journey takes me, help me remain faithful to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
You don’t have to see the entire path to trust the God who is leading you. Sometimes faith is simply taking the next step with the wisdom He’s given you.
Sis, even in the places you never expected to be, God’s hand can still lead you, and His strength can still sustain you. Don’t allow the uncertainty of the journey to make you forget Who you’re depending on. 💗
