The Darkness Cannot Hide You From God
Sis, have you ever found yourself dealing with something that you simply couldn’t make sense of? Maybe it was a situation that seemed to become more complicated every time you tried to understand it. Maybe you were waiting for an answer, trying to make a decision, or struggling with something that had been weighing on your heart for longer than you wanted to admit. You prayed about it, thought about it, and perhaps even talked it over with someone you trusted. But despite your efforts, things still weren’t clear. And if we’re honest, sometimes the uncertainty becomes more exhausting than the situation itself. Because when we cannot see what’s happening or what comes next, our minds have a way of filling in the blanks with worry, fear, and assumptions.
Psalm 139:12 reminds us, “Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” David is acknowledging something extraordinary about God. The darkness that limits our human vision does not limit His knowledge. What is hidden from us is not hidden from Him. What we struggle to understand is never beyond His awareness. And Sis, I believe that’s a reminder we need because sometimes we allow what we don’t know to become bigger in our minds than what we know about God.
And here’s something I’ve been thinking about. We spend a lot of time trying to figure things out. We replay conversations, examine situations from every possible angle, and sometimes imagine outcomes that haven’t even happened. We want explanations because explanations make us feel more comfortable. We want answers because answers give us a sense of control. But the truth is, there will be seasons when we simply don’t have all the information we want. And if we’re not careful, we’ll exhaust ourselves trying to understand something that God has not yet made clear to us.
Now, Sis, let me say something important. Trusting God doesn’t mean we stop asking questions or ignore situations that need our attention. Sometimes we need to gather information, seek wise counsel, have difficult conversations, or make responsible decisions. But there’s a difference between doing what we can to understand a situation and allowing our inability to control it to consume our peace. We can acknowledge what we don’t know without allowing uncertainty to determine how we live.
John 1:5 says, “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” John is speaking about Jesus Christ, the true Light, whose light the darkness cannot overcome. And while this passage carries a deeper meaning concerning Christ and His victory over darkness, it also reminds us that darkness does not have the final authority over the light God has revealed. We don’t have to believe that every difficult circumstance will immediately become clear in order to remain confident in the One who is the Light.
And Sis, sometimes the darkness we’re struggling with isn’t a situation around us. Sometimes it’s something happening within us. It may be an attitude we haven’t wanted to acknowledge, a fear we’ve been trying to hide, or an emotional struggle we’ve convinced ourselves we should have overcome by now. We may be able to keep those things hidden from other people, but God knows what’s happening within our hearts. And here’s the beautiful thing about our Challenge139 journey: God’s knowledge of us is not an invitation to hide. It’s an invitation to become more honest with Him.
Think about how often we try to present ourselves as though everything is fine. We show up, handle our responsibilities, encourage other people, and continue doing what needs to be done. Meanwhile, there may be concerns we’re carrying that nobody else knows about. We may be struggling with disappointment, questioning our decisions, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations. And because we’re accustomed to being the person others depend on, we sometimes hesitate to admit when we need help ourselves. But Sis, being strong doesn’t mean pretending that nothing is bothering you. And trusting God doesn’t require you to deny what you’re experiencing.
Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to acknowledge that we’re walking through a difficult season. We can admit that something hurts, that we’re confused, or that we need support. We can bring those concerns before God without feeling as though our honesty is a failure of faith. God already knows what we’re carrying, and we don’t have to pretend otherwise.
And here’s another thought. Sometimes we’re so focused on asking God to reveal what’s hidden in a situation that we forget to ask Him to reveal what’s happening within our own hearts. We want to understand other people’s intentions, know how circumstances will unfold, and receive clarity about what comes next. But perhaps there’s also something God wants us to recognize about the way we’re responding. Are we allowing fear to influence our decisions? Are we making assumptions without having all the facts? Are we holding on to resentment because we don’t understand what happened? Or are we becoming so consumed with finding answers that we’ve neglected the spiritual growth God has been calling us toward?
Sis, this is why the prayer of Psalm 139:23–24 remains so important. “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” Sometimes the clarity we need begins with allowing God to examine us. Not because every problem is our fault, but because our attitudes, motives, and responses still matter, even when our circumstances are difficult. We may not be able to control everything happening around us, but we can remain willing to let God work within us.
Maybe today you’re facing a situation where the answers aren’t clear. Perhaps you’re waiting for something to change, struggling to understand a disappointment, or trying to make a decision without knowing exactly how things will turn out. I want you to remember that you don’t have to solve every mystery in order to walk faithfully with God. You can pray for wisdom, take responsible steps, seek help when necessary, and trust Him with what remains beyond your understanding.
And as we continue beyond our Day 90 milestone, I want us to remember that spiritual growth isn’t always about receiving new information. Sometimes it’s about learning to respond differently to the things we still don’t understand. Maybe we’re becoming more patient. Maybe we’re learning not to react immediately when something makes us uncomfortable. Maybe we’re discovering that we don’t have to have the final word, know every detail, or control every outcome in order to experience peace.
So today, Sis, I want us to stop allowing uncertainty to convince us that God has lost sight of our circumstances.
He knows what we cannot see.
He understands what we cannot explain.
And He is not limited by the darkness that sometimes surrounds our lives.
The darkness may limit your view, but it cannot limit God’s knowledge.
Keep seeking His wisdom. Keep walking in His truth. And when you don’t understand what’s happening, remember that the God who knows you completely is never confused by what remains unclear to you.
Sis, the darkness cannot hide you from God.
And you don’t have to have every answer to continue trusting Him.
Journal Prompt
What Am I Allowing the Unknown to Do to Me?
Today, take a few moments to reflect on how you respond when life becomes uncertain.
1. What situation have I been spending too much time trying to figure out?
Think about whether your search for answers has become a source of unnecessary worry.
2. Have I been allowing what I don’t know to influence how I think, feel, or respond?
Consider whether fear, assumptions, or frustration have been affecting your decisions.
3. Is there something within my own heart that I’ve been reluctant to acknowledge before God?
Remember, spiritual growth requires honesty, even when what we discover is uncomfortable.
Today’s Declaration:
“Lord, even when I cannot see clearly, I trust that nothing is hidden from You. Help me seek Your wisdom, examine my heart, and walk faithfully through the things I don’t yet understand.”
Today’s Challenge
Trust God With What You Cannot See
Today, we’re going to practice responding to uncertainty with faith and wisdom.
Step 1 — Identify the Unknown
Write down one situation where you’ve been struggling because you don’t have all the answers.
Step 2 — Separate Facts From Fears
Ask yourself:
“What do I actually know about this situation, and what have I been assuming or worrying might happen?”
Be honest about the difference.
Step 3 — Take One Responsible Step
If there’s something you can do to gain clarity or address the situation, take that step.
If there’s nothing you can reasonably do today, acknowledge your limitations and bring your concerns before God.
Step 4 — Invite God to Search Your Heart
Read Psalm 139:23–24.
Ask God to reveal any fear, attitude, or unhealthy pattern that may be influencing how you’re responding.
Today’s reminder: You don’t have to understand everything to trust the God who knows everything.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the God whose knowledge is not limited by darkness, uncertainty, or the things I cannot understand. Thank You for knowing every detail of my life, including the circumstances that have been troubling my heart. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed fear, assumptions, or the need to control everything to interfere with my peace. Sometimes I become so focused on finding answers that I forget to trust the One who already knows what I cannot see. Help me recognize the difference between seeking wisdom and allowing worry to consume my thoughts. Lord, search my heart and reveal anything within me that needs correction, healing, or surrender. When I face difficult situations, give me patience to wait when necessary, courage to act when appropriate, and discernment to make wise decisions. Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, the true Light, and for reminding me that darkness cannot overcome His light. As I continue this Challenge139 journey, help me become more honest with You, more attentive to Your Word, and more willing to trust You through every season. Even when the path is unclear, remind me that nothing about my life is hidden from Your sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
Just because you can’t see what’s happening doesn’t mean God doesn’t know what’s going on. The darkness may limit your view, but it will never limit His knowledge.
Sis, stop exhausting yourself trying to figure out everything you cannot see. Seek wisdom, take the steps you can, and trust God with what remains beyond your understanding. 💗
