Devotional Reflection

Wonderfully Made, Purposefully Created

Sis, have you ever stopped to think about how much of your life is spent doing something for somebody else? From the moment we wake up, there are responsibilities waiting for us. Somebody needs an answer, something needs our attention, a task needs to be completed, or there’s a situation that requires us to step in and handle it. And before we know it, we’ve spent another day being everything everybody needs us to be. Now, don’t misunderstand me. There’s nothing wrong with being responsible, dependable, or committed to serving others. But sometimes we become so accustomed to being needed that we begin confusing our usefulness with our worth. We start believing that what makes us valuable is how much we can accomplish, how many people depend on us, or how well we meet the expectations placed upon us.

But Psalm 139:14 reminds us of something we should never forget. David declares, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Notice that David begins with praise. He recognizes that his very existence is evidence of God’s marvelous work. He isn’t celebrating a title, an accomplishment, or something he has done to impress others. He’s acknowledging the greatness of the God who created him. And Sis, perhaps that’s where we need to begin today. Before we evaluate everything we’ve accomplished or everything we still need to do, we need to remember that our lives are part of God’s wonderful creation.

And here’s something I’ve been thinking about. We often encourage other women by reminding them that they’re beautiful, talented, gifted, and capable. We tell them to recognize their strengths and believe in themselves. But how often do we extend that same encouragement to ourselves? Sometimes we’re our own harshest critics. We focus on what we haven’t accomplished, the mistakes we’ve made, the opportunities we’ve missed, or the things we wish were different about ourselves. We compare our progress to somebody else’s and begin questioning whether we’re doing enough. And if we’re not careful, we can spend so much time identifying what we believe is wrong with us that we forget to acknowledge the wonderful work of the God who created us.

Sis, being wonderfully made doesn’t mean being without weaknesses, limitations, or areas where we need to grow. It means recognizing that our worth is not determined by those imperfections. We can acknowledge that we need to make changes without believing that something is fundamentally wrong with our value as human beings. We can work toward becoming healthier, wiser, more patient, and more spiritually mature without constantly criticizing the person we are today. Growth and gratitude can exist together.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” What a beautiful reminder! In this passage, Paul is explaining that salvation is by grace through faith, not something we earn through our own works. And then he reminds believers that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. In other words, our good works are not what earn God’s grace. They are part of the life of faith that flows from His grace.

And Sis, I think that’s especially important for women who have spent years measuring themselves by their productivity. We become so accustomed to doing that we sometimes forget how to simply be. We feel guilty when we rest. We question whether we’re doing enough when we aren’t constantly busy. We hesitate to say no because we’re afraid of disappointing somebody. And sometimes, even in ministry, we can become so focused on serving that we begin measuring our spiritual value by how much we’re involved in.

But here’s something I want us to remember: God did not create you simply to keep everybody else satisfied. Your life has meaning beyond the responsibilities you carry. Your relationship with Him matters. Your spiritual growth matters. Your emotional and physical well-being matter. And learning to establish healthy boundaries doesn’t make you less faithful or less loving. Sometimes it helps you become a better steward of the life and responsibilities God has entrusted to you.

Now, let me say something else. Being purposefully created doesn’t mean that every woman has to accomplish something extraordinary in the eyes of the world. Sometimes we hear the word purpose and immediately think about a major calling, a public platform, a business, a ministry, or some significant accomplishment. And while God may give us opportunities to serve in those ways, we shouldn’t overlook the importance of everyday faithfulness. Purpose can be reflected in the way we treat people, the integrity we demonstrate, the compassion we extend, the wisdom we develop, and the love we show through ordinary moments.

Sometimes the work God is doing within us is just as important as the work we’re doing for others. Maybe He’s teaching us patience in a season where we want everything to happen quickly. Maybe He’s helping us recognize that we don’t have to respond to every criticism. Maybe He’s revealing an unhealthy pattern we’ve carried for years or teaching us to stop seeking approval from people who will never fully understand our journey. And perhaps He’s reminding us that our identity should be rooted more deeply in Him than in the roles we fulfill.

And Sis, here’s another thought. Sometimes we become so attached to our titles that we don’t know who we are without them. We identify ourselves by our jobs, our family responsibilities, our positions in ministry, or the things we’ve accomplished. But what happens when a role changes? What happens when our children become independent, our careers take a different direction, or a responsibility we’ve carried for years comes to an end? If we’ve allowed those things to become the foundation of our identity, we may struggle to recognize our worth when they are no longer part of our daily lives.

That’s why today’s message is so important. You were wonderfully made before you ever held a title. You mattered before you ever received recognition. And your worth does not disappear when your responsibilities change. The roles we fulfill may change throughout our lives, but the truth that we are created by God remains.

Maybe today you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by everything expected of you. Perhaps you’ve been comparing yourself to another woman who seems to have everything together. Or maybe you’ve been struggling with the feeling that you should be further along in life than you are right now. Sis, I want to encourage you to stop for a moment and recognize how much pressure you’ve been placing on yourself.

You don’t have to accomplish everything to have a meaningful life.

You don’t have to meet everybody’s expectations to be worthy of respect.

And you don’t have to prove your value by constantly exhausting yourself for others.

As we continue our Challenge139 journey, let’s remember that Psalm 139 isn’t simply teaching us how completely God knows us. It’s also inviting us to recognize His marvelous work and respond with gratitude, humility, and a willingness to grow.

So today, Sis, instead of beginning with everything you think you need to fix about yourself, begin by thanking God for the life He’s given you. Thank Him for the strengths He’s helped you develop, the lessons you’ve learned, and the opportunities you have to continue growing. Acknowledge the areas where you need His guidance without allowing those areas to become the entire story of who you are.

You are God’s creation, and your worth begins with your Creator.

Before you were somebody’s wife, mother, daughter, employee, leader, or friend, you were a life known by God.

Before you accomplished anything, your existence mattered.

And long after your titles and responsibilities change, your value will not be determined by how much you can do for somebody else.

Sis, you are wonderfully made, and through Christ, you are called to live a life that reflects the goodness and grace of God.

Don’t become so busy proving your worth that you forget to thank the One who gave you life.

Journal Prompt

Am I Valuing Who I Am or Just What I Do?

Today, take a few moments to reflect on how you’ve been measuring your worth.

1. Have I been allowing my responsibilities, accomplishments, or other people’s expectations to determine how I feel about myself?

Think about whether you feel less valuable when you’re not being productive or needed.

2. What is one thing about myself that I’ve been criticizing instead of approaching with gratitude, understanding, or a willingness to grow?

3. If my titles and responsibilities changed tomorrow, would I still recognize my worth apart from those roles? Why or why not?

4. What is one way I can become more intentional about caring for the life God has entrusted to me?

Today’s Declaration:

“Lord, thank You for creating me with care and intention. Help me stop measuring my worth by what I accomplish for others. Teach me to appreciate the life You’ve given me, grow in the areas where I need Your guidance, and live faithfully according to Your Word.”

Today’s Challenge

Recognize the Woman God Created

Today, we’re going to practice appreciating God’s workmanship without making our accomplishments the measure of our worth.

Step 1 — Begin With Gratitude

Read Psalm 139:14 slowly.

Then thank God for three things about the person He created you to be.

They might include your compassion, resilience, creativity, willingness to learn, or ability to encourage others.

Step 2 — Identify the Pressure

Write down one expectation you’ve been carrying that has made you feel as though you must constantly prove your worth.

Ask yourself whether that expectation is reasonable, necessary, or something you’ve placed on yourself.

Step 3 — Practice One Healthy Boundary

Choose one way to care for yourself today without feeling guilty.

Maybe you need to rest, decline an unnecessary responsibility, ask for help, or spend time doing something that restores your energy.

Step 4 — Encourage Another Woman

Remind someone that her worth isn’t determined by how much she does for everybody else.

Sometimes the encouragement we give another woman is the very reminder we need ourselves.

Today’s reminder: You can be committed to serving others without allowing your service to become the measure of your worth.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for creating me with care, wisdom, and intention. Thank You for reminding me through Your Word that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that my life is part of Your marvelous work. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed my accomplishments, responsibilities, or the expectations of others to determine how I feel about myself. Sometimes I become so focused on meeting everybody else’s needs that I forget to appreciate the life You’ve entrusted to me. Help me recognize that my worth does not begin with my titles, my productivity, or the approval of others. Lord, search my heart and reveal the places where comparison, insecurity, pride, or the need for recognition have influenced how I see myself. Teach me to appreciate the strengths You’ve given me while remaining humble enough to acknowledge where I need to grow. Give me wisdom to establish healthy boundaries, courage to make necessary changes, and grace to recognize that I don’t have to accomplish everything to live a meaningful life. Help me remember that I am Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, and that my service should flow from a sincere relationship with You rather than a constant need to prove myself. As I continue this Challenge139 journey, may I become more grateful for who You’ve created me to be and more faithful in how I live for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sis, Remember This…

Before you had a title, an accomplishment, or anybody else’s approval, you were already God’s wonderful creation. Your worth begins with your Creator, not with what you do for others.

Sis, don’t become so busy being everything everybody needs you to be that you forget to appreciate the woman God created you to be. You are more than your responsibilities. 💗
