Devotional Reflection

God’s Thoughts Toward You Are Precious

Sis, have you ever found yourself wondering what God really thinks about you? Maybe you’ve had a difficult week, made a decision you wish you could change, or experienced something that left you questioning whether you’re doing enough. Sometimes we become so focused on our mistakes, shortcomings, and disappointments that we begin assuming God sees us the same way we see ourselves. We replay what went wrong, remind ourselves of what we haven’t accomplished, and sometimes allow our insecurities to speak louder than the truth of God’s Word. But here’s something I want us to remember today: The way you think about yourself is not always an accurate reflection of how God sees you.

Psalm 139:17 says, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” David is expressing amazement at the greatness and value of God’s thoughts. After reflecting on how completely God knows him, how present God is, and how wonderfully he was formed, David pauses to acknowledge something extraordinary about the mind of God. His thoughts are precious, and their greatness is beyond David’s ability to comprehend. And Sis, what a beautiful reminder that the God who knows us completely possesses wisdom far greater than our own.

And here’s something I’ve been thinking about. We often allow our circumstances to influence what we believe God must be thinking about us. When things are going well, we feel confident that God is pleased with us. When prayers are answered, doors open, and life seems to be moving in the right direction, we recognize His goodness. But when circumstances become difficult, we sometimes begin questioning whether we’ve disappointed Him or whether He’s forgotten about us. We start interpreting His thoughts through our experiences instead of allowing His Word to shape our understanding of His character.

But Sis, God’s wisdom is not limited by our circumstances, and His knowledge of us is not determined by how we happen to feel about ourselves. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses. He knows the intentions behind our actions, the struggles we haven’t shared, and the areas where we still need to grow. And while His complete knowledge should encourage us to live with humility and accountability, it should also remind us that we don’t have to hide our imperfections from Him.

Isaiah 55:8 reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.” In this passage, God calls people to turn toward Him and receive His mercy, reminding them that His ways and thoughts are higher than human understanding. And Sis, I believe this is something we need to remember when we’re trying to make sense of situations that don’t unfold the way we expected.

Sometimes we think we know exactly how God should answer our prayers. We have the timeline established, the outcome imagined, and the steps already planned. And when things don’t happen the way we anticipated, we become frustrated. We question whether God is listening or whether we’re doing something wrong. But trusting God’s wisdom means recognizing that our understanding is limited, even when our desires are sincere.

Now, let me say something important. Trusting God’s thoughts and ways doesn’t mean every disappointment is something He specifically arranged or that every painful experience is automatically part of a hidden plan we must figure out. Life can be difficult, people make choices that affect us, and sometimes circumstances unfold in ways we cannot explain. But even when we don’t understand what is happening, we can continue seeking God’s wisdom, depending on His grace, and trusting His character.

And Sis, there’s another side to today’s message that I don’t want us to overlook. Sometimes the thoughts we struggle with most aren’t about what God is doing. They’re about what we believe concerning ourselves. We tell ourselves we’re not capable enough, disciplined enough, spiritual enough, or successful enough. We compare our progress to somebody else’s and begin questioning whether we have anything meaningful to offer. And if we’re not careful, we begin treating those thoughts as though they’re facts simply because we’ve repeated them for so long.

But here’s what I want us to consider: Just because you’ve been thinking something about yourself for years doesn’t mean it’s the truth. Some of our thoughts are shaped by disappointment, criticism, fear, or experiences that caused us to question our worth. And spiritual growth requires us to become more intentional about examining those beliefs through God’s Word rather than accepting every negative thought as an accurate description of who we are.

Think about how often we extend grace to other people while refusing to extend that same understanding to ourselves. We encourage another woman when she makes a mistake. We remind her that she’s still growing, that she can learn from the experience, and that one difficult moment doesn’t define her entire life. But when we make a mistake, we sometimes become our own harshest critics. We replay the situation, question our abilities, and struggle to move forward.

Sis, you can acknowledge where you need to change without allowing your mistakes to become your identity. God’s Word calls us to repentance, growth, and transformation, but it also reminds us of His mercy and grace. We don’t have to pretend we’re perfect, and we don’t have to remain trapped in the belief that our imperfections make us unworthy of His care.

And here’s something else I’ve been thinking about. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to understand God’s thoughts that we neglect what He has already revealed through His Word. We want answers about tomorrow, explanations for yesterday, and reassurance about every decision we’re facing. But perhaps today we need to spend more time reflecting on the truths He’s already given us. He calls us to love Him, trust Him, walk humbly, extend mercy, practice forgiveness, and seek wisdom. We may not understand every detail of our circumstances, but we can remain faithful to what we do understand.

As we continue this Challenge139 journey, I want us to remember how far we’ve come. We’ve spent 96 days reflecting on the God who searches us, knows us, surrounds us, leads us, and understands us completely. And today, David reminds us that God’s thoughts are precious beyond our comprehension.

Maybe you’re in a season where you’re questioning yourself. Perhaps you’ve been disappointed by something that didn’t work out, struggling with a decision, or wondering whether you’re making meaningful progress. Maybe you’ve allowed somebody else’s opinion to influence how you see yourself, or perhaps you’ve been placing unrealistic expectations on your own shoulders.

Whatever your circumstances may be, I want you to remember that you don’t have to understand everything God is doing to trust His wisdom and care.

You can pray for clarity without demanding every answer.

You can acknowledge your weaknesses without questioning your entire worth.

And you can continue growing without believing that you must become perfect before your life has meaning.

Sis, God’s thoughts are greater than our understanding, and His wisdom is worthy of our trust.

So today, instead of allowing your worries and insecurities to determine what you believe about God, spend time reflecting on what His Word reveals about Him.

He’s faithful.

He’s wise.

He’s merciful.

And He knows you more completely than you could ever know yourself.

Don’t allow the limitations of your own thoughts to make you forget the greatness of His.

Journal Prompt

What Thoughts Have I Been Believing?

Take a few moments today to examine the thoughts influencing how you see yourself and your circumstances.

1. What negative thought about myself have I been repeating so often that I’ve started believing it’s true?

2. Have I been allowing disappointment or uncertainty to influence what I believe God thinks about me?

3. What situation am I struggling to understand because it hasn’t unfolded the way I expected?

4. How can I become more intentional about allowing God’s Word to shape my thinking?

Today’s Declaration:

“Lord, Your thoughts are greater than mine, and Your wisdom is beyond my understanding. Help me stop allowing fear, disappointment, and insecurity to shape what I believe about You and myself. Teach me to trust Your character and renew my mind through Your Word.”

Today’s Challenge

Change the Conversation in Your Mind

Today, we’re going to become more intentional about the thoughts we allow to influence our hearts.

Step 1 — Recognize the Thought

Pay attention to one negative or discouraging thought you’ve been repeating about yourself or your circumstances.

Write it down.

Step 2 — Examine It Through Scripture

Ask yourself whether that thought reflects biblical truth or whether it’s being influenced by fear, disappointment, or insecurity.

Step 3 — Replace It With Truth

Find a Scripture that helps you develop a healthier, more faithful perspective.

When the negative thought returns, intentionally remind yourself of that truth.

Step 4 — Release What You Cannot Understand

Identify one situation where you’ve been demanding answers that you don’t currently have.

Pray for wisdom, take any responsible steps available to you, and acknowledge what remains beyond your control.

Today’s reminder: You don’t have to understand every thought of God to trust the character He has revealed through His Word.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the God whose thoughts are precious and whose wisdom is greater than anything I can comprehend. Thank You for knowing me completely, understanding every concern I carry, and remaining faithful through every season of my life. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed my worries, disappointments, insecurities, or past mistakes to shape what I believe You think about me. Sometimes I become so focused on my own understanding that I forget how limited my perspective really is. Lord, search my heart and reveal the thoughts that have been influencing my attitudes, decisions, and confidence. Help me recognize when I’m being too critical of myself, when I’m allowing fear to control my thinking, or when I’m expecting answers You have not yet revealed. Teach me to seek Your wisdom through Your Word, receive Your correction with humility, and trust Your mercy and grace. When circumstances don’t unfold the way I hoped, remind me that Your character remains faithful. When I struggle with insecurity, help me remember that my worth is not determined by my accomplishments or the opinions of others. Continue renewing my mind and shaping my heart as I grow in my relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sis, Remember This…

You don’t have to understand everything God is doing to trust His heart. His thoughts are greater than your understanding, and His wisdom is worthy of your trust.

Sis, stop allowing your insecurities to speak louder than God’s Word. Just because you question your worth doesn’t mean God has forgotten the woman He created you to be.
