Devotional Reflection
More Than You Can Count
Sis, I was just sitting here thinking that I was really good in math in my school days. I excelled at all levels of math but God’s math is one that I cannot figure out. My counting skills can only go so high before I begin to become confused. Today’s scripture reminds me that we spend too much time counting what is wrong, missing, or even what hasn’t even happened just yet, but we fail to look at the countless ways that God has shown us His faithfulness. Let’s talk about how we should remember that His mercy meets us every morning.
I’ve noticed that I spend a lot of time and quick time making lists of everything that wrong. Before I even get out of the bed, I am already thinking about what needs to be done, what I did not complete before going to bed and then I even go so far to start thinking about tomorrow and what needs to be done there. But I had to step back this morning and think… Have I become so accustomed to counting my problems that I’ve forgotten or stopped recognizing God’s faithfulness?
In Psalm 139:18, David is continuing his reflection on the preciousness and greatness of God’s thoughts. Remember yesterday we focused on what God thinks about us. But David takes it a step further and says that God’s thoughts outnumber the grains of sand. What a beautiful picture of something too great to measure.
And Sis, I love that because sometimes we become so focused on what has changed in our lives that we forget to appreciate what hasn’t changed about God. That’s a shout right there. God has not changed? No, He hasn’t, Our life’s circumstances have changed from one day to the next, our plans may change, and we change but the great thing about this is that God does not change. God’s character has not changed. His faithfulness is not dependent on our circumstances, and His mercy is not something we have to earn by having everything together.
I pulled in Lamentations 3:22-23 this morning, “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” The part that gets me with this particular passage of scripture, is that the writer wanted to acknowledge God mercy and I feel that the writer is doing this from a place of turmoil, grief, and sorrow. Sometimes the most meaningful expressions of gratitude come not because everything is going well, but because ewe recognize God’s faithfulness even when life is hard.
And to be honest with you to understand that I am in the thoughts of God even in my hard times is reassuring. And to know that He is faithful during this times as well as in good times. Be intentional, Sis, about remembering the faithfulness of God. Spend less time focusing on what is wrong, or missing. You know what stop worrying about the disappointments of life as well. Sit and focus on God’s faithfulness. Think about it. Maybe you woke up with yesterdays disappointments on your mind. Maybe the situation hasn’t changed and you’ve not received your answer from God. Well Sis, continue to pray, seek wisdom, and focus on how God has been faithful in the past, and how he is faithful now.
Journal Prompt
What Have I Been Counting?
Today, let’s reflect on what has been receiving the most attention in our thoughts.
1. Have I been spending more time thinking about what’s wrong or missing than recognizing the ways God has been faithful?
2. What are three things I can thank God for today that I may have been overlooking?
3. Is there a disappointment or unanswered prayer that has been making it difficult for me to appreciate my current blessings?
4. How can I become more intentional about beginning each day with gratitude rather than worry?
Today’s Declaration:
“Lord, thank You for Your mercy that meets me every morning. Help me recognize Your faithfulness even when life is difficult. Teach me to count my blessings without ignoring my responsibilities and to approach each new day with gratitude, wisdom, and trust.”
Today’s Challenge
Count His Faithfulness
Today, we’re going to shift our attention from constantly counting our concerns to intentionally recognizing God’s goodness.
Step 1 — Start With Five
Before you become overwhelmed by today’s responsibilities, write down five things you’re grateful for.
They don’t have to be extraordinary. Sometimes the simplest blessings are the ones we overlook most often.
Step 2 — Remember His Faithfulness
Think about one difficult season you’ve already experienced.
What helped you through it? How did you recognize God’s provision, strength, or mercy?
Step 3 — Change Your Focus
When you catch yourself becoming consumed with what hasn’t happened or what you’re worried about, pause.
Ask yourself:
“What is one thing I can thank God for right now?”
Step 4 — Share Your Gratitude
Encourage another woman by sharing something you’re grateful for.
Sometimes hearing somebody else’s testimony reminds us to recognize God’s goodness in our own lives.
Today’s reminder: Gratitude doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means we remain willing to recognize God’s goodness even when life isn’t.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for another day and for the mercy that meets me every morning. Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your compassion, and the countless ways You’ve cared for me throughout my life. Forgive me for the times I’ve become so focused on my problems, disappointments, and unanswered prayers that I’ve overlooked the blessings already before me. Sometimes I allow my responsibilities to overwhelm my thoughts before I’ve even taken a moment to acknowledge Your goodness. Lord, help me develop a heart of gratitude that doesn’t depend on everything going the way I planned. Teach me to recognize Your faithfulness in ordinary moments, appreciate the people and opportunities You’ve placed in my life, and remain thankful even when circumstances are difficult. Search my heart and reveal any attitude of comparison, entitlement, or dissatisfaction that has been keeping me from appreciating what I have. Give me wisdom to address the things that need attention, patience when answers are delayed, and strength when responsibilities become heavy. Thank You for the lessons You’ve taught me, the grace You’ve extended when I’ve fallen short, and the opportunities You’ve given me to begin again. As I continue this Challenge139 journey, help me become more intentional about remembering Your goodness and sharing that encouragement with others. May gratitude shape my perspective, humility guide my actions, and Your Word continue transforming my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
Sometimes we’re so busy counting what’s wrong, what’s missing, and what hasn’t happened that we forget to count the countless ways God has already been faithful. Don’t let today’s worries make you forget yesterday’s testimonies.
Sis, before you start counting everything you have to do today, take a moment to thank God for the mercy that allowed you to see another morning. His compassion hasn’t run out, and His faithfulness hasn’t changed.
