Devotional Reflection

Let Him Lead

Sis, We have spent a lot of time in Psalm 139 talking about God knowing us, seeing us, searching us, and revealing what is within us. But David ends this beautiful Psalm with a request: “…lead me…” There comes a point, Sis, when we have to stop asking God to simply show us the way and become willing to actually let Him lead us. There is a difference between the two.

Sometimes we want God to show us the way so we can look at the directions and decide whether we want to go. We want to know where the road leads, how long it will take, what we might encounter, and whether the journey will be comfortable. But when David says, “lead me,” he is surrendering control. He is saying, God, You go first, and I will follow.

Maybe that is where some of us are today. We have prayed, searched, questioned, planned, and tried to figure everything out. We have asked God for confirmation after confirmation because we want to be certain about what comes next. Yet sometimes God doesn’t give us the entire plan. Sometimes His answer is simply, “Follow Me. And Trust Me!”

Notice that David doesn’t ask God to lead him into the easiest way, the quickest way, or even the way that makes the most sense to him. He says, “…lead me in the way everlasting.” God’s direction will not always match our plans. Sometimes His leading will require us to wait. Sometimes He will redirect us. Sometimes He will close a door we were certain should open. And sometimes He will ask us to take a step when we cannot see what comes after it.

But here is what we can hold on to: the One leading us already knows the entire way. We don’t have to know every turn when we trust our Guide. We don’t have to understand every delay, detour, closed door, or unexpected change before we obey Him. Following God requires us to trust His perspective more than our own.

After everything Psalm 139 has taught us about the God who knows us completely, perhaps this is where that knowledge was supposed to bring us all along—to trust. If He knows me completely, sees me completely, surrounds me completely, formed me intentionally, and searches my heart lovingly, then surely I can trust Him to lead me.

Sis, maybe today you don’t need another sign. Maybe you don’t need God to show you the next ten steps. Maybe your prayer simply needs to become, “Lord, lead me.” And when He does, trust Him enough to take the next step.

Journal Prompt

Take a moment and write about this:

Where in my life am I asking God for direction while still trying to remain in control?

Then write:

What would it look like for me to truly let God lead me in this area?

Finish by writing this sentence:

“Lord, I may not know where this road leads, but I trust the One who is leading me.”

Today’s Challenge

Follow the Next Step

Today, identify one area of your life that you have been trying to figure out, control, or force.

Write it down.

Then underneath it write:

“God, I give You permission to lead me here.”

Spend a few quiet minutes with God and ask:

“Lord, what is my next obedient step?”

Don’t demand the whole plan today. Don’t worry about step ten. Just be willing to follow Him in the next step.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for knowing me completely and loving me completely. I confess that sometimes I want Your direction while still wanting control. Today, I surrender my plans, my timing, and my way to You. Lead me. When I cannot see what is ahead, help me trust You. When You redirect me, help me follow. When You tell me to wait, help me wait. When You tell me to move, give me courage to move. I don’t need to know the whole way because I know the One who is leading me. Lord, lead me in the way everlasting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sis, Remember This…

You don’t need the whole map when you’re following the One who already knows the way.

Sis, let God lead. Your job is to follow the next step.
