Psalm 91:14–15 (KJV)
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”
Devotional Reflection
He Knows Me. I Know Who to Call.
Sis, there is something comforting about knowing that you are known by God. Psalm 139:1 reminds us, “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.” God doesn’t just know your name; He knows you. He knows the woman behind the smile, behind the title, behind the responsibilities, and behind the “I’m okay.” He knows what you carry that nobody else knows you’re carrying. He knows the prayers you haven’t found the words to pray yet. And He knows the places in your heart where you need Him most.
And you may say how long will we be here? Believe it or not there is so much to unpack from this first verse – and for some reason the Spirit keeps bringing us back here. This morning I feel like we need some additional support to help us to work through our understanding of God “knowing” us. Buckle up Sis we have to get this. So I tied in Psalms 91 into this conversation as well.
But Psalm 91 turns our attention in another direction. God says, “because he hath known my name.” Think about that for a moment. Psalm 139 reminds us that God knows us, while Psalm 91 asks whether we know Him. Not simply whether we know about Him, but whether we have come to know the God whose name we call. and maybe that is the issue? We have been placing emphasis on God doing all of the work in knowing us BUT do we know him?
There is a difference between knowing someone’s name and knowing who they are. We can know Scriptures about God, sing songs about God, attend church, serve in ministry, and still discover that God is inviting us into something deeper. Challenge139 has never simply been about learning more verses. It is about developing a deeper, more intimate relationship with the God who already knows us completely.
And when you begin to know Him, something changes about the way you face trouble. Psalm 91:15 doesn’t say trouble will never come. God says, “I will be with him in trouble.” That distinction matters. Sometimes we pray for God to keep us from every difficult place, while His promise is that when difficult places come, we will not enter them alone.
Maybe today you are carrying something that feels heavy. Maybe there is a situation you cannot fix, an answer you are waiting for, a decision you don’t know how to make, or something happening beneath the surface that nobody else sees. You may not know what is going to happen next, but Sis, you know Who to call.
And look at the promise: “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him.” God doesn’t say you need an impressive prayer. He doesn’t say you have to get all the words right. He says, call. Sometimes the most powerful prayer you can pray is simply, “Jesus.” Sometimes calling His name is your confession that I can’t handle this by myself, but I know the One who can hold me while I walk through it.
The God who searched you and knows you is the same God who says, “I will be with him in trouble.” Before you ever call, He already knows why you’re calling. Before you explain the hurt, He knows where it hurts. Before you tell Him you’re tired, He knows how long you’ve been carrying it. Before you ask Him to come near, He is already there.
So today, don’t let trouble make you forget what you know about your God. You know His name. You know where your help comes from. You know Who has carried you before. And most importantly, you are known by the One you’re calling.
Sis, He knows you.
And you know Who to call.
Journal Prompt
Take a moment and think about what it means to truly know God, not simply know about Him.
Write down:
What have I personally learned about who God is through the experiences of my own life?
Then think about something you’re currently carrying and answer:
Am I spending more time worrying about this situation—or calling on the God who already knows about it?
Finish with:
“God, because I know You as __________, I can trust You with __________.”
Fill in those blanks from your own experience with Him.
Today’s Challenge
Call His Name
Today, choose one name or characteristic of God that speaks directly to what you need.
If you need peace, call Him your Prince of Peace.
If you need provision, remember Him as your Provider.
If you need guidance, call Him your Shepherd.
If you need comfort, remember He is with you.
Write your chosen name or characteristic somewhere you will see it throughout the day.
Every time worry, fear, frustration, or uncertainty tries to take over, pause and say:
“I know Who to call.”
Then call His name and talk to Him about what you’re carrying.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You that You have searched me and You know me completely. Thank You that I don’t have to explain every detail before I come to You because You already know. But Lord, I don’t just want to be known by You; I want to know You more. Teach me Your heart. Help me recognize Your character and trust Your promises. When trouble comes, remind me that You never promised I would walk through life without difficulty, but You promised to be with me in trouble. When I am afraid, overwhelmed, confused, or tired, remind me that I know Who to call. Thank You for hearing me, answering me, staying with me, and loving me. May every season of my life draw me into a deeper relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sis, Remember This…
The God you are calling on already knows why you’re calling.
Sis, He knows you. He sees you. He is with you. And you know Who to call. 💗
